Mabrousha (Castle Stones) Dessert

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (340 g) flour

  • 200 g butter

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with the sugar until combined.
  2. In the mixing bowl, add the first egg to the butter and sugar mixture.
  3. In the mixing bowl, add the lemon or orange zest with the egg.
  4. In the mixing bowl, add the vanilla to the mixture.

  10. In the freezer, place a piece of dough in a bag to freeze for grating over the top later.
  11. In a 25 cm diameter baking pan lined with parchment paper, spread out the remaining dough to an even thickness.
  12. In the pan, raise the edges of the dough slightly so the jam does not run out.
  13. In the pan, prick the dough with a fork so it does not puff up in the oven.
  14. Over the dough in the pan, add jam as desired and spread it over the surface.
  15. Over the top of the pan, grate the frozen dough to cover the jam layer.
  16. In the oven, bake the pan at 200 degrees.
  17. In the oven, place the pan on the lower rack with top and bottom heat on.
  18. After baking, leave the dessert to cool slightly before serving.
  19. On a serving plate, invert the dessert and serve.
  20. On the serving plate, cherries may be added for garnish, if desired.
